Michael Butterfield BSc MSc MD FRCPC, Pain Psychiatrist

Dr. Michael Butterfield is a certified psychiatrist and is a Fellow of the Royal College of Physicians of Canada.

His passion for improving the care of individuals suffering with chronic pain has driven him to complete extra training in developing skills in different forms of psychotherapy techniques such as acceptance and commitment therapy and intensive short-term psychodynamic therapy.

Dr. Butterfield completed a BSc. degree in Behavioral Neuroscience and then went on to complete a MSc. degree in Neuroscience at the University of British Columbia before enrolling in medical school. He completed his medical training through the Island Medical Program in Victoria and then moved to Halifax, Nova Scotia to complete his specialty training in psychiatry. He is also currently the inaugural resident of the Pain Medicine subspecialty training program at the University of British Columbia.

Dr. Butterfield has served on numerous committees at the regional and national level. He is a board member of the Canadian Psychiatric Association and the Canadian Academy of Psychosomatic Medicine. He has a strong interest in medical education and has delivered numerous workshops at national and international conferences on this topic. He also is an active researcher with ongoing projects and has received funding from regional, national and international organizations to continue his work.
