Foundations of Psychology

Length: 3 sessions       Program Cost: $195 ($65/session)

This program explores the effects of persistent pain on individuals and relationships.

Foundations of Psychology helps you explore:

  • How your pain has changed your daily life
  • How pain has affected your emotions, relationships and behavior
  • How pain might have forced you into becoming a different person
  • How to be aware of which parts of your former self you have lost, and which parts you haven’t lost
  • The importance of acknowledging the changes caused by pain
  • How to find your way back to your own identity.

You should go if...

  • You want to understand the how pain affects your mood and how your mood affects your pain.
  • You think you are becoming anxious or depressed as a result of your pain or other reasons
  • You are noticing that your relationships are becoming more difficult because of your pain
  • Your provider recommends it

Leaving the Depression Behind

Length: 4 sessions  Program Cost: $275 ($69/session) 

This four session group module (75 minutes/session) will help explain the association between persistent pain and mood, and how to manage, and potentially prevent these issues.

Students will learn: 

  • About the relationship between pain and depression, how to identify when you are depressed, and how depression can stop you from doing the things you need and want to do.
  • How your beliefs and behaviours affect your mood, how to take steps to make those thoughts work for you instead of against you, and the role that expectations and acceptance play in this process.
  •  How to manage unhelpful beliefs and behaviours, including individual strategies and actions you can take to manage depressed mood.
  • About steps you can put into place to manage depression before it becomes a problem.

Dialing Down Stress and Anxiety

Length: 4 sessions  Program Cost: $275 ($69/session) 

This four session group (75 minutes/session) will help explain the relationship between persistent pain, anxiety, and mood, and how to manage, and potentially prevent these issues.

Students will learn: 

  • About the effect that anxiety has on pain, how to identify when you are anxious, and how anxiety can stop you from doing what you need to do to manage pain and feel better.
  • How your beliefs and behaviours directly impact how anxious and stressed you feel, the role of avoidance in anxiety, and how to take control of unhelpful beliefs and behaviours.
  • How to develop relaxation and self-regulation techniques, and additional strategies to manage anxiety.
  • About preventative steps you can take to manage stress and anxiety before it becomes a problem.

How to Have a Social Life with Pain

Length: 4 sessions   Program Cost: $275 ($69/session) 

This four session group module (75 minutes/session) will discuss the many ways in which pain can have a negative impact on relationships and what you can do to lessen or reverse that impact.

Students will learn: 

  • About the various ways that pain can impact relationships with your spouse, children, family, friends, and others, in terms of closeness, communication, activities, and identity.
  • How gender, personality, and cultural differences affect pain expression, communication, and management.
  • How to develop strategies that will allow you to enjoy social and leisure activities while successfully manage pain.
  • How to identify and overcome the ways in which pain can interfere with sex and intimacy. As part of this topic, we will discuss the fear of pain, lack of spontaneity, and awkwardness.

Surviving the Claims and Litigation Process

Length: 4 sessions   Program Cost: $275 ($69/session) 

This four week group module (75 minutes/session) will explore the claims and litigation processes, and how to manage the impact it can have on pain.

Students will learn: 

  • About the nature of the claims process with employers, insurance companies, ICBC, WorkSafe, and the courts.
  • About the role of medical, emotional, and functional assessments when persistent pain and disability are the focus.
  • How to manage the rehabilitation process and your claim while also dealing with pain.
  • How to take steps to manage the stress of claims, discovery hearings, and court processes, which can have an impact on your pain.
