Dry Needling or Intramuscular Stimulation (IMS)
What is Dry Needling or Intramuscular Stimulation (IMS)?
Dry Needling (DN) or Intramuscular Stimulation (IMS) uses a fine and flexible stainless-steel needle to release tight painful bands of muscle caused by an abnormally functioning nervous system.
How much does it cost?

I believe that exercise can change lives.
Moving your body can create such profound effects across all body systems. We know exercise can help elevate mood, optimize sleep, defend against cognitive decline and of course, build a strong and resilient body. Exercise is good for us -but we already know this. So the more important question becomes how? How do you know what’s helpful or harmful? How do you know you’re on the right track? How can you get a movement program that’s designed for you?
I don’t have all the answers but I’m willing to try -that’s the least you can expect from your healthcare professionals. My patients are truly my inspiration and I’m grateful for their trust.
I started at changepain clinic in 2018, first as a Kinesiologist and now a Physiotherapist. My experience playing competitive hockey with Oxford University allows me to apply the principles of personal training not only to athletes but for overall longevity. I personally never got into physiotherapy because of sports and athletics. My particular interests are with the general population -where small changes in one’s health can have large effects. This is where my passion lies.
During our sessions, you will experience rehab through a blend of lifestyle, manual and active therapies. You will have a custom exercise plan that is safe, simple and effective. Also, depending on your degree of persistent pain we may also apply pain science to your care. As always, it depends on the individual.
Intramuscular Stimulation FAQs
Dry needling has been shown to immediately increase range of motion, decrease muscle tone, and decrease pain with musculoskeletal conditions. The suggested benefits can be seen below.
Local Twitch Response: Dry needling can elicit a local twitch response which is an involuntary contraction of the affected muscles that are being dry needled. This response can lead to alteration in the length and tension of the muscle fibers.
Effects on Blood Flow: Sustained contraction of the taut muscle bands in trigger points might cause local ischemia and hypoxia. Dry needling causes vasodialiation in the small blood vessels leading to increased muscle blood flow and oxygenation.
Neurophysiological Effects: Dry needling may produce local and central nervous system responses to restore homeostasis at the site of the trigger point which results in reducing both the central and peripheral sensitization of pain.
IMS may be a care option for treating your pain. This will be determined by you and your physiotherapist either after completing your physical assessment on your initial visit or later at one of your regular physiotherapy follow-up sessions. To discuss this care option or to start please book an initial or follow-up physiotherapy appointment.
