About Surgical Patient Optimization

Surgical patient optimization is a multidisciplinary, structured, and personalized prehabilitation program designed to assist patients in preparing for surgery. Prehabilitation before major surgery can lead to a faster recovery, better patient experiences and outcomes, and savings for the health care system. (Specialist Services Committee)

Best practices for surgical prehabilitation focus on both mental and physical aspects of surgery by decreasing presurgical risk factors and increasing a patient’s functional capacity.  Surgical Patient Optimization Collaborative (SPOC) improves the experience for surgical patients by:

  • Using a patient-centered and multidisciplinary approach.
  • Supporting care providers to implement change processes.
  • Using preoperative surgical wait times.
  • Integrating available community resources.
  • Improving patient outcomes.
CHANGEPAIN Specialization

Of the 13 specific areas of optimization, we specialize in helping patients with the following:

  • Frailty, Nutrition, Physical Activity, Smoking Cessation, Mental Health, and Pain Management.

We use a combination of MSP-covered procedures where appropriate for pain management, and Group Medical Visits.

As a team, we will be working towards an optimization process fueled by acknowledging your experiences and a desire to improve your surgical outcomes.

If you have third-party coverage, you also have access to our other services.

How do I get started?

Ask your surgeon, anesthesiologist, doctor, nurse practitioner to send an MSP referral. Download Referral Form.

In the meantime, connect early with our physiotherapists or chiropractor for your peri-surgical musculoskeletal evaluation and rehabilitation program. We bill directly to your third-party insurance.
