IV Iron Therapy
What is IV Iron Therapy?
Iron deficiency is one of the most common, and most often missed, causes of ongoing fatigue, low mood, poor concentration, and hair loss. When your iron stores run low, your body can’t make enough healthy red blood cells to carry oxygen where it’s needed — which is often why iron deficiency leaves people feeling exhausted, foggy, or simply “not themselves,” sometimes even when a standard blood count still looks normal.
For many people, iron can be replaced with a daily pill. But pills aren’t the right fit for everyone — some people can’t tolerate the stomach upset they cause, some don’t absorb iron well through the gut, and some need their levels corrected more quickly than tablets allow. IV (intravenous) iron delivers iron directly into the bloodstream, bypassing the digestive system, so your levels can be replenished in as little as one or two visits.
Is IV Iron Right for You?
Your Changepain physician may recommend IV iron if:
- Iron pills haven’t worked, or upset your stomach
- Your body has trouble absorbing iron — for example, due to a digestive condition
- You’re losing iron faster than pills can replace it, such as from heavy periods
- Your iron levels need to be corrected more quickly than oral iron allows
IV iron isn’t the automatic starting point for everyone — it’s a decision your physician makes with you, based on your bloodwork and health history. If you’re pregnant, let your physician know, as it affects which iron product is right for you.
Your Visit
Fast, effective relief for iron deficiency — delivered under a physician’s care, is split into two simple steps.
Step 1: Your Consultation
You’ll meet with a Changepain physician for a consultation (billed to MSP, like a regular office visit). We’ll review your bloodwork and history together and confirm whether IV iron is right for you. If it is, your physician will write a prescription, and our team arranges for your medication to be prepared and sent to the clinic ahead of your infusion appointment — there’s nothing for you to pick up yourself.
Step 2: Your Infusion
Your infusion is a separate appointment, typically about an hour.8 Unlike the consultation, this visit is private-pay, not MSP-covered. Our Private Pay Services Coordinator will book this visit with you and confirm the cost beforehand, so there are no surprises. On the day, our front desk team will check you in and get you settled; a registered nurse starts your IV and administers the infusion, with a Changepain physician overseeing your care throughout the visit.
What to Expect
Before starting, a nurse will check your vital signs and go over your health history with you. The infusion itself is given slowly through an IV in your arm — most people relax, read, or use their phone while it runs. Afterward, we monitor you for at least 30 minutes to make sure you’re feeling well before you head home.9
Most people tolerate IV iron well and return to their normal activities the same day. It’s common to notice improvements in energy over the following days to weeks, as your iron levels rise.
Safety and Side Effects
IV iron has a strong safety record when it’s given in a clinical setting with proper monitoring — exactly how it’s administered at Changepain.10
Most side effects are mild and short-lived, including:
- Some soreness or irritation at the IV site
- A metallic taste, mild nausea, or flushing during the infusion
- In the day or two after, some people notice a low-grade fever, mild aches, or headache — these usually settle on their own and can be managed with acetaminophen (Tylenol).
Serious allergic reactions are rare but possible with any IV medication.12 That’s why every infusion at Changepain is given with a physician on-site and monitoring equipment on hand — our team is trained to recognize and manage a reaction quickly, should one occur.
If you develop difficulty breathing, swelling of your face, lips, or throat, or a widespread rash in the days after your infusion, seek emergency care right away.
How much does it cost?
If you have a serious pain syndrome and other conventional treatment options have failed or have made little progress, our Pain Infusion Therapy may help.
This is a private pay procedure.
Some extended health plans and other insurers cover the cost of treatment or part of the cost. Please check with your insurer to find out if you are covered.
Note that some hospitals may provide other forms of infusion therapy within their budgets that are funded by Health Authorities.

PAIN INFUSION THERAPY FAQs
Around one hour, plus a short monitoring period afterward. Exact timing can vary slightly depending on your dose.
For many patients, a single infusion is enough to fully replace iron stores. In some cases, your physician may recommend a second session — this depends on the type and dose of iron used, and will be discussed with you
Eat a normal meal beforehand and stay well hydrated. Please bring a list of your current medications and let us know about any allergies.
